How To Write Hubs To Make Money
77You must define your audience before you write...
...and distinguish between whether you're writing a commercial or non-commercial hub.
Writing articles on HubPages is a wonderful way to make money online. At the time of writing this hub I have been a member of this site for nine months. In this hub I'd like to share my views on how to use HubPages to make money. I present my ideas in a very blunt way and look forward to your comments and reactions in the comments section! When writing hubs you must define your audience: HubPage fans or search engine traffic
An informative non-commercial hub is written to contribute to the education of the HubPages community.
Firstly, before you start to write your hub you must decide in your mind who is your target audience - Your HubPages fans or search engines (Google, Yahoo & MSN/Bing) visitors? This is a crucial decision. If your target audience is your friends on your HubPages fan list you are writing what I call a non-commercial informative Hub for the benefit of the HubPages community. This kind of Hub should be your free-flowing writing which is a mere reflection of your thoughts, observations, life experiences etc. This kind of Hub is not keyword-driven. Thus, there is really little to no need to do keyword research and on-page SEO so that your Hub will appear in the search engine results.
You need HubPages fans and hub comments to get inbound links into your profile
However, with a non-commercial informative hub what you are aiming for is to gradually build up your fan base and get comments placed on your hubs and profile page. Why? Because each time you get a new fan or a new comment on your hub that's a new inbound link to your HubPages profile. The Internet and Google is like one big voting machine and with each new link coming into your hub pages and profile your HubPages profile "build legitimacy" in the eyes of Google and that makes it much easier to get your commercial hubs indexed and to appear on the Google search.
A commercial hub's job is to SELL SELL SELL!
Now, I'd like to define what I call a commercial hub. A commercial hub is much more structured, requires keyword research, SEO and most likely reviews a product. Compared to a free-flowing hub written for your HubPages fan list it's a totally different kind of animal. In your non-commercial hubs you don't care about making money. Your goal is to inform, make friends and get inbound links. However, in a commercial hub your aim is to get your hub to come up in a search engine search for a pre-determined keyword. Your goal is to monetize from your hub from either clicks on your Google AdSense or by your visitor clicking on a link at the end of your hub to your website or any other web page with an affiliate offer.
Commercial hubs require keyword research and SEO
Thus, there are several ingredients which go into making a commercial hub. Firstly, as stated above, it is based on a keyword or small group of keywords. In most cases these words are describe what you want your search engine visitor to buy. A second and crucial ingredient of a commercial hub is that you do some basic on-site SEO. By this I simply mean that you include your keyword in your a) HubPage title, b) H1-H4 tags, c) bold text and d) hub tags. Note, do not over stuff your HubPage with your keyword. Just mention it a few times in those four areas I just mentioned.
The next and most final ingredient to your commercial hub is that somehow it's reviewing a product or service. Very simply, you need to describe the product or service that you're trying to sell and somehow convince your visitor that this particular product or service is worth buying.
Commercial hubs SHOULD be short - 300-350 words max!
For a commercial hub I recommend no more than 300-350 words. Why? Because you don't want what I call "empty text space" in the center of the page as your visitor is scrolling down your hub. You want either a) the Google ads to be showing at the top of the hub or b) your affiliate link showing at the bottom of your hub. If your commercial visitor has to scroll down through too much text you'll lose his or her attention and they'll hit the back button and the sale is gone!
Seems no more eBay boxes in HubPages after July 1 - your thoughts?
One last note about commercial hubs. Based on a post that eBay Partner Network put on its blog in May it appears that after July 1 they will no longer allow EPN members to link into eBay from sites they don't own. Click the link in my forum post here to learn more. If I'm reading this correctly it means no more eBay boxes in HubPages! If any of you readers have any comments on this issue please let us know in the comments section below.
I believe there is nothing wrong with writing commercial hubs if we're also contributing to the HubPages community.
In closing this hub I'd like to mention one last thing. Many of us on here it seems are either out of a job due to the bad economy or are Internet entrepreneurs or a combination of the two. In my opinion there is NOTHING WRONG with using HubPages as a tool to drive Internet traffic for for commercial means (to make money!). In fact, HubPages surly WANTS commercial hubs so that they also make money on AdSense clicks. I think the way to go is to find a middle ground where you write a combination of non-commercial informative AND commercial product review hubs. That way you're making friends here and getting those necessary inbound links to your profile which allow you to get a stronger position for your more commercial hubs on Google.
I hope these ideas have helped you and look forward to your comments below.
Distinguish between commercial and non-commercial hubs and you'll be well on your way to making money on hubpages

That's interesting information about eBay, I was just thinking about signing up
Your slant on things is refreshing. Thank You.
Dawei, I see you don't activate Kontera, do you find it to be ineffective for this venue? Also, where in the body do you use a h4 heading?
Regards..
Dawei, I have activated kontera on most hubs just to see how it works. As far as revenue it's not very productive, my concern is how annoying it might be for a reader, no feedback on that. H4 - that makes sense, if I remember the priority bolding falls below a h4?
Regards..
My take on kontera is that it sometimes confuses readers as to what is a link that the author meant to offer as a resource and what links are simply ads. Of course, that is the point. Breaks the trust between author and reader a little.
Hello. This is very informative. You are really good at writing these types of hubs. I am learning alot through your post. Thanks for the information. I hope you have a great day:)
Thanks man, I'm just starting out in this and found this information very helpful. I look forward to following your materials.
Matt
ne eBbay boxes after July 1. May be true. I have been trying for the past week to get the ebBay net workd affiliate code. I am not able to cross step 2 and reach 3. Therefore, your though may be true. Oor is ther any other problem
Good information here Dawei, I appreciate your insight and sharing with the HP community. Can you expand on what you mean with the H1-H4 tags. How do they differ from the hub tags and where are they?
Well I can see why I ran into this hub on page 4 of the Hottest Hubs list. :D
Congrats on your once again very useful article, also on your page ranking. Your hard work should be rewarded with comments so that your work becomes more visible.
Of course you know I have given this another thumbs up!
Medical info seems to fall into categories for both hubs community and search engine results or non-commercial and commercial, what do you think?
Well the least I can do is congratulate you on your successes, given all I've learned from you. Nice to be able to share something helpful with you this time. :)

Thanks for this informative hub. My college bound daughter is trying to hub for some extra cash and I think this will be informative for her.
Thanks for sharing out your useful tips, i had learn a new tricks. all the best to you
Very informative hub. I look forward to reading your other hubs also. Regarding the eBay question, I think ebay links should be allowed on HubPages.
I agree with you that there should be balance between commercial and non-commercial, but not necessarily 50/50. Most people on here are probably here to make money in some form or another, but we should all help each other out and not JUST focus on the money all the time. Even a 'charity' site is to eventually produce revenue for their purpose, and not our own gain.
BTW, thanks for becoming a fan. That's how I found you. I will definately become a fan, read your written hubs, and try to keep up on future ones.
i was not writing any article for commercial. I am trying to give information. I just wanted people to know something.
nice hub. thanks for these tips. i think i am going to be a fan of yours. i just joined a week back and have to admit that my only reason for doing so was the commercial aspect. but slowly i am learning that there is more to hubpages than just about making money. you can share information, acquire knowledge, and actually build relationships as well.
Very useful information Dawei, this is my first time I am checking out Hubpages and I am really impressed of what I see so far! I think I am going to check out all your other hubs! Thanks for your presence in Hubpages :)
I just started out with this "hub" thing. This hub is very useful with all that information.
Thanks
I signed up yesterday thinking to share some insight and information. I am very happy I saw this hub!
Opportunities seem endless when you are alone on the "information highway", but when you travel together and share with others - endless just seems like such a small word.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge Dawei and everyone who added comments. There is much here and I will have to come back when I've had a chance to try and put into practice what has been shared.
Amazing. So cool. Thanks
Wow thanks dawei888 .... Now that was fast answer :D i'll look more deeply into your profile and hubs.
Dawei, this is is a very informative hub on marketing and hubpages. Under your classification, it's quite possible that none of my hubs are commercial, even though they feature ads.
Yes, you have INDEED helped! Thanks for posting. You have clarified a few things for me.
Thanks for a very helpful article.
Great ... but surely the sole aim of a commercial Hub is not just to Sell, Sell, Sell. In my own web browsing the things that I am most always looking for are information and knowledge. And I find it hugely annoying to click through to a site that seeks to sell me something (e.g. an e-book) rather than the information and knowledge that the articles' title suggested I would find.
This is a very informative hub. You explained very well the difference(s) between a commercial and non-commercial hubs.
I just write hubs because I love writing and sharing what I know. Now maybe I should start writing commercial hubs too.
By the way, pardon me if I ask a naive question - What are H1 - H4 tags?
Thank you.
I don't think the eBay announcement will affect Hubpages. First of all, I think something would have been said about this by now. Also, I think Hubpages falls under the Social Networking business model which is still an allowed model.
When EPN mentions that you can no longer link directly to eBay from a page you do not control, they are talking about advertising in contextual networks and possibly even buying an advertising spot on a blog that you do not own. Since you control the content of your hubs then this would be allowed.
Just my two cents. BTW, I'm new to Hubpages and trying to figure everything out so I can add some great Hubs to my network of sites. Thank you for the great information regarding commercial and non-commercial Hubs.
Bcarter
Thanks for the info. I will keep it all in mind
Thumbs up again! I'm new here and have only released one hub so far and it is a commercial one. Given your info above, I'll look at the needs of this community before releasing other commercial hubs...AND refer back to this article.
MUCHOS gracias!
Good job!
Thank you for the informative hubpage article. Most useful to me was the word count necessary for the commercial hub. It was pleasing to know that a lot of words are not needed to review a product.
Just wanted to know why Google is more receptive to hubages writers with plenty of fans. You would think that as long as the content was not overpromotional and had keywords that Google would be pleased.
I just need more information on why Google is appreciative of the fan base when it seems as though that would benefit the hubpage writer more.
I attended a security webcast seminar yesterday and learned that Googe likes frequent article updates of which I am in the process of doing. Also I am aware that the Google search engine likes for hubpage writers to include at least one or two internal links as that is part of the language of Google.
Still unclear about the fan base relevancy to the Google search Engine.
Good read dawei. I didn't know about comments being logged as backlinks, I thought only fans counted towards backlinks. I was more of a squidoo fan until I realized how well hubs ranked on Google. I once saw a hub competing agains 70000 optimized pages and placed third on the first page of G. Another amzing thing about hub is how fast it gets indexed, I only have two hubs so far but both of them got crawled by Google in less than 3 hours. Thanks for sharing your know-how, this hub was definitely helpful.
I'm checking out your adsense hubs, as you can see :-) I am impressed with how well written they are, makes it easy to understand what can sometimes be a bit of a complex topic for a newcomer. I'm interested in trying a shorter commercial hub, and seeing how that goes. I thought every hub had to be about 800 words or so!
This was one area (commercial / non-commercial) where I was searching for info. Thx for putting it together.
Agreed, Google is definitely showing HP lots and lots of love. Squidoo isn't the same since the Google slap and I'm definitely putting all my efforts on HP from now on. By the way, your hubs are comment magnets, a testament to their excellence I believe.
Nice hub, very informative and easy to understand. I've started to write hubs recently and this hub will surely help me. thanks!
Very good stuff... defining the audience is a very important first step!
I also joined recently and found many useful insights in your hub. It has helped me to put the revenues I can expect from my non-commercial hubs into perspective and saved me from future disappointment. Thanks for that.
Thanks. I'm new to hubs and am experimenting with different ways to approach topics and figuring out what the financial expectations of each should be. This is great insight into the community vs. commercial angle.
Just by having account here at hubpages we do technically own a share of hubpages, so Ebay boxes should show up on our hubpages, because that would make the ebay affiliate program rather redundant.
great hub page...
This great information. I'm going to put it to the test and I'll be sure to let you know the outcome =)
I have a question and since you're mentioning commercial hubs here, I thought I'd ask. When I made a hub, it says we can click "High" for highly commerical. What is the criteria for that? I should request for you to write a hub on it, but I don't know if you already wrote one or not.
Terriffic stuff man, you really broke it down for me. I feel lucky to have stumbled this way since this is the first time here, and I just found out what hubbs even are just yesterday. Again I appreciate the info, your the man!
I am new to HubPages and am appreciative of your shared knowledge. I will try some of your techniques.
Thank you for explaining the non-commercial/commercial categories of hubs. Very helpful....I don't know what I don't know.
what shall i say regarding this hub this is so informative. keep the good work going
Hey dawei, great Hub! Very informative!
Here's To Your Success! I'll stop back for more great strategies!
this was a terrific Hub and really shows me some new things and angles. Hmm, it's groundbreaking to see that commercial Hubs should be about 350 words max. Perhaps . . . I've often felt that up to 500 is better for search engines . . . but I'm sure 350 is fine.
I agree that commercial hubs are fine if you're contributing posts of value . . . to me that's the bottom line for online writing and marketing . .. participate and contribute unique value.
Most of my articles are more journalistic in nature . . . some rank quite high and do well . . . but I can agree that really clear products reviews are the best draws and certainly "how to" Hubs that move readers in a logical sequence.
This offers another way of organizing the writing.
Thanks for this very useful and informative hub.
Thanks for taking the time to share this.
Thanks dawei,
you are really making a positive difference! I can tell you will go far!
Good Post Actually I am new on the hub so it's very imp for me...
Keep Ip Up
Hub well structured. I'm taking "keyword research" serious lately, I see it counts regarding traffic and convertion rates. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for a very informative and basic explanation of seo and keyword how-to. It is all very overwhelming and hard to sort out, but this gives me a great place to start! Thank you thank you. I am looking forward to seeing more of this from you hopefully. Now if I could just figure out how adsense works - I get sporadic jumps in earnings from time to time and I want to capitalize on that.
I just wrote a Hub on garden and landscape products that I feel is commercial quality. I like re-reading this particular Hub.
Hi again dawei888. I don't know how to get more detailed information about which hubs get the the clicks. I had a nice 70 cent jump and then a 30 cent jump a few days later. I need to take a whole day and explore my adsense account I think. Is there anyway to track the ad clicks for Google? I am setting up another account on hubpages just to see what categories will get more clicks. My biggest views go to a political article, so I don't think there would be a lot of clicks there.
I also set up an Amazon account but have seen no results so far and I am worried I did not link them properly in the hubs I put them in.
Thanks for inquiring by the way and visiting.
One more good Hub with great tips on how to structure the hubs for search engines. I´ll definitly use those tips on my next hubs. Thanks!
thanks dawei888, I'll do that today.
Hi dawei, fancy meeting you on twitter! This is a great hub. As usual, i learn something new from your hubs.
I now understand the difference between a commercial and non-commercial hub. All i need to do now is learn to make my commercial hubs shorter. Tends to be a bit too long sometimes.
Im still having problems with URL channels and google analytics. Im going to follow the tips in your post reply to Alexander on URL channels. Hope i sort it out finally.
Thanks for the info-packed hub.
That's very interesting what you say about commercial hubs being short. I've only made one sale from Amazon, and that was on a short hub (under 450 words), but I hadn't twigged that the length of the hub was a factor in the sale. I have a tendency to write long hubs (most of mine are over 1000 words, and I have a few that are over 2000 words). But I might try the idea of writing short hubs with an Amazon link. Thanks for the suggestion!
dawei888, I like the way you format your hubs, I will have to try it on mine, it looks like you use one capsule for your main text with bold headings for each new section and then you use a large photo at the bottom of the text, also you have a intro phrase, of what we can expect from the hub, then an explaination of each point and then a closing statement that summaries the main points and then a participation phrase for those to comment on what they just read.
Thanks I will have to try it on mine.
Hi Dawei.
Im slowly getting through your hubs as i always finish reading your hubs excited having learnt something useful to improve on the art of seo and writing good content. Then off i go to make the improvements.
It is tough to maintain a balance between seo and good content,so thanks for the explanation here on commercial and non -commercial.
Dawei888,
You are full of information. I have been reading your hubs ever since you became a fan of mine which I appreciate. Thanks for the HTML tips. I never looked at it that way. And starting next week I will use Wordpress Blogs. Have a great day.
Michelle
Thanks for this page! Its always good to read up on how to make this hub thing work for me and help me reach my goals so kudos! I actually found the hubpages from a friend suggesting I use it to link to my blog. I had been looking at making money from blogging and getting no where fast! Within an hour here I was hooked! I had 2 fans and some of the nicest comments too! My blog had been up for a few months with no followers or comments and no way of knowing if anyone was even viewing it! I have been here for 7 days now and have made £0.18 and while that isnt much it gives me confidence that I am spending my holiday time wisely! Reading pages like this one also adds to that confidence! What a great community here!
Oh I almost forgot, don't you think that sometimes good content will be good commercially like if you are say writing a book review? Any hubber who is a book worm might be interested in finding a new good book and of course anyone looking for reviews on an obscure book should find the hub page book review, generating both sorts of traffic?
Just got on here wrote a little piece about writing for examiner.com and hubpages and found your pages as related subject. Great aticle I learned a lot. If you'r not already witing for the examiner you should. ith your skills and you already have a built in following i think you would do very well. Thanks again.
Interesting stuff, thanks for posting!
Thanks for the information, I need all the wisdom I can dig up. I appreciate especially that you differentiated the commercial and non-commercial hubs. I think they are both valid and important.
Very helpful information and thank you for sharing it. GBY
The information are really true. If anyone want to earn money then read it out.
Thanks for the useful tips, just got to put them into action now! : )

Informative as usual. Thanks.
